PASTORAL CARE

Personal Focus

Ensuring students have a completely healthy and happy time at KCSM is key. Our pastoral care structure is designed so that students receive great individual attention and a dedicated support system. Our small class sizes of 10-12 students mean student progress is easily monitored.

There are designated tutors to every pupil so that pupils can benefit from having a supportive staff member nearby to discuss any questions or concerns they have.Tutors also write reports to parents four times a year – midway through term one and at the end of each subsequent term on the student’s progress.

Career guidance is supplemented with talks from working professionals and international university representatives; the school organises trips regularly to English universities and host a Universities Fair annually.

Communication

As a basic principle, King’s College actively encourages effective communication between school and parents. We endeavour to involve parents fully in the education of their children and see this partnership as an essential aspect of our care for every individual.

Opportunities for effective communication and participation exist in a wide variety of forms. On a collective level there is a regular flow of information to parents and students via newsletters, calendars of events and handbooks. From time to time the reactions, opinions and requirements of parents are canvassed via discussions, questionnaires or surveys.

Families are provided with regular written reports on individual student progress and designated tutors keep parents up to date with individual progress.

Health

The school has a matron on-site who supports pupil’s specific medical needs. In the event of a more serious medical problem the nurse will arrange for the student to see a doctor or be taken to a local hospital.

Staff and personal tutors work closely with students to ensure that they settle in well at the school, are happy, and feel that both academic and personal needs are being met.

Religion

Students of many nationalities attend King’s College Saint Michael’s, and a variety of religious faiths and denominations are represented. The school is very proud of this diversity. Students have access to a church and a multi-faith prayer room and are free to practice their religion however they like.

The school does not host religious ceremonies, although we do use the church for our traditional Christmas carol concert.  This gives our students an insight into traditional British customs.

SCHOOL MEALS

Meals for all students are taken in the splendid panelled dining room. Residential students are provided with breakfast, lunch and dinner here. Students living with a host family will also have lunch in the dining room but will have breakfast and dinner with their family. All meals are included in the school fees. The catering manager is keen for students to add their requests to our varied menu. Special meals, such as Chinese Night, British Week, Mexican day, Halloween Lunch, Christmas Lunch, Barbecue Night are frequently organised to celebrate special occasions.

The residential houses also have a kitchen for students to use if they wish to cook snacks for themselves and friends during the evenings and weekends. The kitchens are equipped with a kettle, microwave oven, rice cooker, toaster and fridge. The larger communal kitchen which is available for all students is also available in the evenings and weekends. This enables the students to extend their cookery skills by offering more equipment than in their own residence. the catering team also arrange cookery classes as a recreational activity or to prepare students for independent life at University.
